Initial Consultation

We encourage and welcome both members of a couple, or a friend or family member if you do not have a partner, to attend the first visit. A comprehensive history is taken and records and previous testing is reviewed.  Many times, a physical exam, ultrasound and/or blood work may be performed.  During this visit, you will meet with Dr.Kelly and your fertility nurse specialist.  We take time to answer your questions and outline a plan for further evaluation or treatment options.

We ask that you bring the following to your first visit:

  • Completed female and male questionnaires
  • Genetic questionnaires
  • Medical records for both partners from any previous fertility evaluation or treatment
  • Insurance cards and identification for both partners
  • A referral from your primary care physician if needed

Initial Infertility Workup

An infertility evaluation usually consists of hormonal tests, testing of the uterus and fallopian tubes and semen analysis.

Hormonal Tests

Measuring hormones in the blood can provide a wealth of information: whether or not a woman is ovulating, the reason she may not be ovulating, the adequacy of the environment in which the egg is maturing and the likely quality of the eggs being released. These tests are specific to certain times in a menstrual cycle and are carefully mapped out.

Hormonal levels measured in men may at times give insight into why a semen analysis is not normal or sexual dysfunction is occurring and whether or not medication may help.

Evaluating the uterus and fallopian tubes

Several tests can be performed to evaluate the uterus:

Hysterosalpinogram is an X Ray test performed in which contrast fluid (dye) is injected into the cervix and is monitored as it travels through the uterus and fallopian tubes. The test is performed in a Radiology Center by a reproductive endocrinologist in conjunction with a radiologist.

Sono HSG/sonogram is an office based procedure in which sterile water is injected into the uterus and the uterine cavity is visualized by ultrasound.

Hysteroscopy is a procedure in which a small telescope is used to directly visualize the interior of the uterus.  This can be performed in the office or an outpatient surgical suite.

Semen Analysis

A semen analysis assesses the number of sperm in a sample (concentration), the shape of the sperm (morphology), if the sperm is moving (motility) and how well they are moving (progression).
